She reached her fifty in just 28 balls, the fastest by an England woman in T20Is. Beaumont fell for 23 in the eighth over, but Wyatt continued her onslaught with Sciver-Brunt, who joined her at the crease. The duo added 72 runs in just 7.2 overs, taking England past 150 in the 15th over. After Wyatt’s wicket Sciver-Brunt carried on the carnage. She smashed seven fours and two sixes in her 36-ball 58, reaching her fifty in 32 balls. England Women lost some wickets in the final overs, but still managed to post a daunting total of 197-6, the highest by any team against India Women in T20Is. Team India Women Fall Short Despite Harmanpreet’s Heroics Team India Women had a tough task ahead of them, chasing 198 for a win. They lost Shafali Verma in the first over, caught by Wyatt off Katherine Brunt for a duck. Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues tried to rebuild the innings, but both fell in quick succession, leaving India Women at 41-3 in the seventh over. Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, then took charge of the chase. She played a captain’s knock, hitting six fours and four sixes in her 46-ball 68. She found some support from Deepti Sharma, who scored 24 off 19 balls. The pair added 69 runs for the fourth wicket, keeping India Women in the hunt. However, England Women tightened their grip on the match with some disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. They broke the partnership in the 15th over, when Sharma was run out by Wyatt. Harmanpreet Kaur also fell in the next over, caught by Sciver-Brunt off Sophie Ecclestone. India Women needed 77 runs from the last four overs, but the lower order could not produce any miracles. India Women finished at 159-6 in 20 overs, falling short by 38 runs. For England Women, Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-18 in four overs. Brunt, Sarah Glenn, and Mady Villiers also claimed a wicket each, while Wyatt was named the player of the match for her blistering knock. What’s Next? The second T20I of the three-match series will be played on Friday, December 8, 2023, at the same venue. India Women will have to bounce back strongly to level the series, while England Women will look to seal the series with another win.
